How to evaluate alternative therapies

Although alternative therapies can help in many cases, some may be not effective, expensive and even dangerous. The best way is to educate you evaluate your options. Ask yourself the following:

* What is the treatment?
* What is included in treatment?
* How does it work?
* Why does it work?
* Are there any risks?
* What are the side effects?
* Is it effective? (Calls proof or evidence.)
* How much?

Once you’ve answered these questions, think about your options and decide if the benefits outweigh the risks.

If you decide to try an unapproved treatment, make sure your health and your wallet are protected.

Do not take what they say as fact. Contact a reliable organization and talk to them about the therapy. Talk to your family and friends. Although it may not always support you, you can help make an educated decision and objective.

Speech therapy with your doctor. Make sure your doctor knows which treatment you are considering so you can talk about all interactions or side effects that may occur with the treatments already are taking. Your doctor can also give information on experiences of other patients who have tried the therapy.

Talk to other patients who have used the therapy. Ask them about their experiences with therapy. Do not think just the experience or the recommendations given by the people who give the therapy. Find your own references and opinions.

Contact the Better Business Bureau and fully investigates the history of those who want to therapy. Find out how long you been doing the person giving the therapy, and brings more information about their credentials and their treatment philosophy.

Avoid people who give therapy that will not work with your physician. Make sure the person giving the therapy does not mind sending their patients to a conventional doctor when necessary.

Make sure you know what’s going to cost before beginning treatment. The insurance does not cover most alternative therapies, or as you need to know for exactly going to be responsible.
Warning signs

See how it promotes the product or the person giving the therapy. Be careful if you are promoted through:

* People who sell by phone
* Advertising sent directly to your home
* Advertising Programs on TV
* Advertising disguised as real news
* Advertising in the rear of journals

Also, beware of the following:
Large claims

Be careful with the product or the person giving the therapy that says there is a “cure” for a disease or condition or make other outrageous claims.
